An elderly woman living alone in Naples' Arenella district was allegedly scammed and then assaulted in her own home on 11 September 2026. A 17-year-old suspect, accused of posing as a carabiniere, was later detained.
The case centers on the so-called "false carabiniere" method: according to the reports, the alleged offender claimed the woman's valuables might be linked to a robbery. The victim was 93 years old and alone at home at the time.
What allegedly happened
The suspect allegedly presented himself as an "apprendista carabiniere," or apprentice carabiniere, and showed a counterfeit identification card.
The reported theft involved gold bracelets, medals, a valuable watch and €800 in cash. When the woman apparently realized it was a ruse, she was assaulted.
She sustained head trauma and fractures. Il Mattino reports a 38-day prognosis. Fanpage.it reports that she was hospitalized at Cardarelli hospital and was not in danger of death.
How the suspect was identified
Il Mattino reports that investigators used condominium surveillance footage and photographic recognition by the victim.
Following that work, a 17-year-old from the Quartieri Spagnoli was detained under an urgent detention order.
