The Green Sea project has entered its operational phase with the installation of the first structures on the seabed in Zone B of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. The announced intervention covers 100 square metres of seabed.

The project is carried out by ISSD-ETS with DISTAV of the University of Genoa and the support of Fondazione Deutsche Bank Italia.

First installations in Zone B

According to the reported project announcement, the first Green Sea installations have been placed in Zone B of the marine protected area. The stated objective is the recovery of 100 square metres of seabed.

No further operational details were included in the consulted sources. The technology, materials and functioning of the installations have not been specified, and no measured environmental results after installation are yet available.

A restoration effort inside a monitored protected area

The intervention takes place in a marine area where environmental protection and scientific monitoring are declared priorities. The Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area promotes projects for safeguarding the marine environment, protecting protected species, and monitoring living species and water quality.

That context matters for readers: Green Sea is not described as an isolated installation, but as work carried out inside an area whose managing body states that conservation and monitoring are part of its mission.

Why Zone B matters: the example of Ieranto Bay

Zone B includes seabeds characterized by biodiversity monitored by the Park. In the Baia di Ieranto, also in Zone B, the Park reports underwater monitoring and says it has recorded 260 species.

The same bay is reported to host Posidonia meadows and protected species among the habitats and organisms detected there. Those findings do not describe the outcome of Green Sea, but they illustrate the ecological value of the type of seabed found in this part of the protected area.

What is not yet known

Several important points remain unspecified in the sources consulted:

  • how the Green Sea structures are designed to support seabed recovery;
  • the full schedule of works and the duration of monitoring;
  • the quantitative criteria that will be used to assess the success of the intervention.

Independent sources confirm the protection and monitoring context of the Marine Protected Area, but they do not provide separate verification of the operational details of Green Sea.

For now, the verified picture is limited but concrete: work has started, the first installations are in Zone B, the target area is 100 square metres, and the next meaningful update will be measured evidence of change on that portion of seabed.
