More than 150 experts, researchers and university lecturers met at the Oasi Diga Alento, in Cilento, for the seventh congress of the Società italiana di ecopatologia della fauna.
The meeting, reported by Il Mattino Napoli, brought together veterinarians, ecopathologists, epidemiologists and other specialists, with the involvement of the Università Federico II di Napoli and its Dipartimento di Medicina veterinaria e produzioni animali.
The central theme was a One Health model in which ecosystem health, wildlife health and human health are treated as interdependent.
Giuseppe Iovane underlined two points: wildlife can act as a reservoir of infectious disease, and the fragmentation between professions needs to be overcome in order to protect health more effectively.
What One Health means
The World Health Organization defines One Health as an integrated approach that connects human, animal, plant and ecosystem health.
In practice, it calls for collaboration, communication and coordination across the sectors responsible for those fields.
According to WHO, the approach applies to zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance, vector-borne diseases, food safety, pollution and climate change. WHO also reports that more than 60% of emerging infectious diseases reported globally originate in animals, including both wild and domestic animals.
That global figure describes a worldwide pattern; it cannot be read as a direct description of the epidemiological situation in Campania.
Why animals matter for prevention
Separate peer-reviewed research, used here as background rather than as a report on the congress proceedings, has documented how disease in animals can help identify environmental and toxicological risks for people earlier.
Because humans and animals share environments and food sources, episodes of illness or mortality in animals have in some cases preceded recognition of toxic exposures in people. In that literature, animals are described as potential sentinels of environmental hazards.
The same background literature points to another general implication: monitoring animals, the environment, food and people together can improve prevention and public-health response to emergencies.
