Naples has increased patrols in Posillipo after reports of disorder linked to nightlife, with police, Carabinieri and municipal police involved in the strengthened presence.
The issue is not limited to Posillipo. Other parts of the city, including areas of the historic centre, are also affected by nightlife-related pressures.
Mayor Gaetano Manfredi frames the question partly as one of managing public space, where crowding outside venues can create noise, disorder and safety risks.
Alongside the increased controls, the proposal under discussion is for "stewards of the night" paid by venue operators. They would act as a preventive and mediating link with law enforcement.
According to the proposal, their duties would include monitoring the spaces outside venues, preventing crowding, facilitating passage for pedestrians and residents, and keeping entrances and driveways unobstructed.
The proposal specifies that the stewards would not replace police. It would require training, defined responsibilities and coordination with the Municipality and competent authorities.
It remains unresolved whether the steward scheme will be formally adopted. No verified timetable, budget, list of participating venues or defined geographic perimeter has been provided, and the longer-term effect of the Posillipo patrols is not yet established.
